So you want to become a firefighter? Here's how:
Step 1 - Become an Explorer or Volunteer:
Explorer programs are generally offered to Junior-High
or High-School age teens who aspire to be full time or volunteer firefighters,
but all ages can join.
Volunteer programs are offered by most local fire departments, although
most will require you to be a legal adult before signing on. Contact
your local fire department for more information. Links to Fire Departments
local to Kansas City can be found here.
Step 2 - Obtain Training:
FireFighter and EMT courses are offered by most community
colleges and will give you a good solid base from which to gain experience.
Completing professional training courses will also increase your chances
of being hired as a firefighter.
Step 3- Apply for Positions:
The competition for full time firefigher positions
can be pretty stiff, but keep training and applying!
